Can Synthetic Diamonds Be Better Than The Real Thing?
Adam’s Jewelers offers its customers only the highest quality diamonds, each one certified as 100 percent natural. But technology has brought us an alternative, synthetic diamonds are virtually impossible to tell from a natural diamond, and for a less expensive price. Does this sound too good to be true? You just might want to do some homework before deciding, even if you are on a budget.
First of all, it is easy to confuse synthetic diamonds with diamond simulants like cubic zirconium (CZ), moissanite, white sapphire, high leaded glass (rhinestones) or Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG). While all of these may look like synthetic or natural diamonds in appearance, none of them are created solely out of carbon, the trait shared only by synthetic and natural diamonds. Once you have separated the simulants from synthetic diamonds, it’s a bit less cumbersome to compare it to a natural diamond. The first question then, is…how has science been able to create a gem that shares the identical chemical composition and physical properties as something that takes Mother Nature billions of years to produce? The most common method is via a process known as Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), which mimics the conditions under which natural diamonds are formed in nature. Carbon gasses are heated to extremely high temperatures until the molecules break apart and release carbon atoms. They then tumble down upon a diamond substrate and form layers that eventually emerge as a diamond that, to the naked eye, looks every bit like its natural counterpart.
So what’s all the fuss? If it’s so hard to tell the difference between the two…why pay the difference? Ultimately it will come down to individual preferences. Synthetic diamonds are beautiful, clear and tend to have fewer flaws than natural diamonds. Yet there are those who will always be a little hesitant about the prospect of buying a man-made gem, a great looking knock off with the same qualities and chemical composition of a natural gem, but in the end, still a knock off. Natural diamonds hold the allure that they are produced deep inside the earth and are unique in that they are created over a span of billions of years, and as such are made to last for several generations. They are a unique work of nature, a piece of art that hold the mysteries of earth’s formations from the days before man walked the planet. Call it the glamour, or romance factor, but there’s no disputing the natural diamond’s history sets it apart from its mass produced lab grown counterpart. Remember Adam is the King of Diamonds!
