Ruby Engagement Rings: The Ultimate Choice

Nothing epitomizes love, commitment, and passion like the color red. And while ruby may not necessarily be the first precious gemstone that comes to mind when thinking about engagement rings, they are nonetheless the ultimate choice if you want to show the love of your life that you are ready to start a new life with her. Ruby engagement rings have always been preferred to the other engagement rings with precious gemstones like diamond, emerald, and sapphire. And the reason is quite simple – ruby symbolizes love, passion, courage, and protection. Besides, ruby is undoubtedly the king of the gemstones.

Giving engagement rings has been traced back to ancient Egypt although it is largely believed that the Greeks introduced it to the Western world after its adoption from Egypt. However, records show it was the Romans that had very detailed descriptions of how and why engagement rings were given in the first place. The engagement ring signified that there will be nothing that can break the promise of marriage between the man and the woman he loves.

Ruby engagement rings follow in the tradition of the first use of gemstone in engagement rings. It was in the Renaissance period when diamonds were first used as an ornament on the engagement ring of Mary of Burgundy by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria. It is the aggressive marketing campaign of De Beers in the late 1930s that created the impression that diamonds are forever. This is the reason why diamonds were always equated with members of the nobility, the wealthy, and those of the social elite.

What many do not know is that, even before the use of diamonds, rubies were already being used by nobility. Rubies are known in the gemstone world as the undisputed ruler of all gemstones. For thousands of years, rubies were highly regarded as the world’s most valuable gemstone. Its magnificent color, superb brilliance, and excellent hardness make it the perfect choice for members of the noble class. Ancient kings and queens were known to use these fiery red gemstones in their rings and as ornaments to their crowns and staffs. Present-day royalties still have rubies in their royal insignias. And while there were no ruby engagement rings yet in the ancient world, the mere fact that these gemstones were already being used by members of the ruling class, the nobility and the royalty, is a testament to ruby’s position as the world’s ultimate gemstone.

The key to choosing the best and highest quality ruby you can give to your loved one is looking at its color. For the best and truly top luxury ruby look for the Burmese ruby. This gemstone has a rich, full red color with a slight bluish hue.

Men’s Rings: How To Find The Right One For Your Guy

Ladies, we all know men are easy to shop for. Food and booze usually keeps them satisfied, but sometimes they need that little extra special treatment. Especially when it comes to wedding rings or engagement bands, men’s rings are a big deal; men don’t usually wear jewelry on their hands so when it comes time for them to do so it should be something they can wear every day and still be stylish. Here we’ll give you some advice on what kind of ring or band to get your man.

When it comes to men’s rings the two major complaints are, “it’s too girly”, or “it’s too flashy for my liking.” Rings have been masculine and feminine for as long as we can remember, since he will be wearing this piece of jewelry for the rest of his life with you, you need to pick out something he will love. There are some things to consider when choosing his wedding band: the width, metal choice, fit, finish, detailing and engraving.

When it comes to the width make sure you know how thick you want your ring to be. Have him try on a couple of different sizes to see which best fits his finger. For metal the choices are: platinum, white gold, yellow gold, palladium and rose gold. They all have different benefits when it comes to the durability, color, glow and price. The fit of the ring is probably one of the most important things, you have to make sure it fits comfortably on his finger, and can be adjusted through time if need be, make sure you try on all different sizes. When people talk about the finish on a ring they mean the texture of a ring’s metal. The most traditional texture would be high polish, it has a reflective finish. Detailing is optional as well as engravings when it comes to men’s rings and wedding bands, but you could if you would like add some style to it.

If all of this seems too stressful for you to figure out on your own, Adams Jewelers is here to help with your man’s ring! With our professional ring specialists we are here to help you with all your questions or needs. Call or click today to figure out when you can come in and get the help you need for your special day.

  • Bold and Beautiful: Black Diamond Ring

Bold and Beautiful: Black Diamond Ring

    black diamond ring

Be Daring with a Black Diamond Ring

Black diamonds are stunning, distinct, and they elicit a lot of questions: are they real? Are they rare? Are they expensive? Where are they from? These stones ignite curiosity partially because of their deep, inky appearance but also because they are not used in jewelry nearly as often as their colorless cousins. So if you are on the market for a breathtaking and truly unique piece of jewelry, you might want to seriously consider shopping for a black diamond ring.

Black diamonds have never been as popular as colorless diamonds when it comes to jewelry. This is partially because black diamonds are rarer than colorless diamonds and partially because they are more difficult to cut than colorless diamonds. It is important to clarify that there are in fact two kinds of black diamonds: those that have gotten their color through artificial means (irradiation and/or heat treatments) and those that got their color naturally. The latter are known as Natural Fancy Black Diamonds.

There are varying mythologies that surround black diamonds, and many of them are in conflict with one another. For instance, in India black diamonds have traditionally been considered to be cursed as they are believed to resemble the eyes of spiders and snakes. On the other hand, in medieval Italy it was believed that the stone contained powers strong enough to mend a troubled marriage.

In recent years black diamonds have in fact increased in popularity and they have been showing up more and more in popular culture. These beautiful gems have been spotted being worn on the red carpet by the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Evan Rachel Woods, Katherine Heigl and Sarah Jessica Parker to name a few. In fact, Carrie Bradshaw, Sarah Jessica Parker’s character in the popular TV series Sex in the City, is given a black diamond in one episode of the show! In real life, Carmen Electra also received a black diamond ring upon her engagement to Rob Patterson.

If you are in the market for an alluring and unique piece of jewelry, perhaps consider the option of a black diamond ring. These inky stones look exquisite both alone and surrounded by colorless diamonds (the contrast is truly stunning!). Come by Adam’s Jewelers in Roseville today to pick out the perfect black piece for you or your loved one. You deserve a diamond as unique as you are!

  • White Gold Engagement Rings

    White Gold Engagement Rings

An In Depth Look At White Gold Engagement Rings

When people think of gold they usually think of yellow gold; maybe images of King Tutankhamun’s famous mask come to mind, or perhaps pictures of denim-clad California miners toting chisels and pans flash in the mind’s eye. What a lot of people don’t realize is that gold (the metal) can come in a number of colors including yellow gold, rose gold, green gold, and white gold. While yellow gold has traditionally been the most popular color when it comes to gold, white gold has significantly increased in popularity in the last 20 to 30 years. In fact, demand for white gold engagement rings continues to rise.

White gold and yellow gold have the same properties, but they get their difference in color due to different metals that are mixed with the gold. Yellow gold gets its color from being mixed with copper and silver; white gold gets its color from being mixed with nickel or zinc, sometimes even platinum. On occasion, when an even whiter appearance is desired, the white gold will be plated with rhodium, a very rare member of the platinum family. Plating of this type is especially common in white gold engagement rings.

Since white gold is made by mixing various alloys, the color of white gold does vary slightly. Depending on what it is added it may have a warmer or cooler appearance. As mentioned above, plating also plays a large role in the whiteness of the gold.

Despite the similarity in appearance, white gold is not to be confused with silver or platinum. White gold is considered more rare than silver and less rare than platinum. Each of these metals also handle differently from one another, especially when used for jewelry. If you are on the market for an engagement ring, it is a good idea to investigate all the details of the metals you are considering: hardness, malleability, color, alloys used, potential allergens and more.

White gold was originally fashioned in order to give the look of jewelry more variety. Today it is used in jewelry alone as well as in combination with yellow gold, which gives it a stunning appearance known as “two-tone.” The white color is also exquisite for setting exceptionally white diamonds; this of course has contributed to the growing trend of white gold rings.

Are you a bride-to-be hunting for your perfect ring? Are you about to pop the big question and are in the market for white gold engagement rings in Sacramento? If so, you’re in luck because Adam’s Jewelers in Roseville, California has an incredible selection of white and yellow gold engagement rings. • Princess Cut Diamonds

    Princess Cut Diamonds

    princess cut diamonds

A Crash Course in Princess Cut Diamonds

Diamonds have been popular for personal ornamentation for centuries, but so-called princess cut diamonds have a much more recent history.  The exact moment of origin of the princess cut diamond isn’t exactly agreed upon, but historians and diamond aficionados suggest that this type of cut came about in the 1960’s or 1970’s.

Before the introduction of princess cut diamonds, brilliant round diamonds dominated the diamond market. Round brilliants still control the diamond market today but princess cut diamonds are an impressively close second.  Together, these two diamond shapes make up the large majority of diamond purchases.

One of the most obvious differences between round brilliants and princess cuts is the shape: as the name suggests, round brilliants are round, while princess cuts are either square or rectangular.  The difference in shape impacts the way the diamond handles light as well as the price of the diamond.  To understand the price difference, it is helpful to look at how diamonds are cut.

The shape of a piece of diamond rough is known as an “octahedron”. Now, imagine you are a diamond cutter. If you simply cut the octahedron in half, what are you left with?  If you said two princess cut diamonds you would be correct. The shape of the octahedron naturally encourages the shape of the princess cut. This means that much more of the rough diamond is preserved in the creation of a princess cut than in the creation of a brilliant round.  Look at it this way: a brilliant round yields only about 40% while princess cuts can yield 80-90%!  That is why some refer to the princess cut as the diamond cutter’s dream.

This can also seem like a dream to budget-conscious diamond shoppers.  Because of the large difference in yield (a 1-carat rough can either yield a 0.40 ct brilliant round or a 0.80-0.90 ct princess cut), you can get a larger princess cut diamond for the same price as a smaller brilliant round.  Of course, this is part of what has led to the rapid growth in popularity of the princess cut in a relatively short amount of time.

At Adam’s Jewelers in Roseville, we have a wide selection of princess cut diamond and round brilliant diamond rings to choose from.  If you are in the Sacramento area and you are looking for the perfect diamond for yourself or for a special loved one, be sure to swing by Adam’s Jewelers and let the pros help you find the perfect fit.

Wedding Sets For Him And Her

    Finding The Perfect Wedding Sets

Wedding sets include an engagement ring and a matching band for both the bride and groom.  It is important to note that wedding sets are different from bridal sets, which just include the engagement ring and a band for the bride only.

One of the perks of selecting these sets, versus individual rings are one-stop shopping.  Also, the rings in these sets are created to go together.  So you can count on having beautifully matching his and her rings. If you are unsure about which sets to choose from, your jeweler would be more than happy to help guide you towards a beautiful option for your bride to be.  If you are shopping as a couple then your bride may already have a set in mind.  However, if you are shopping to surprise her, then you may want to consider the following things when looking for sets:

Match proportion – Make sure that you aren’t overwhelming the engagement ring by getting a large wedding band for her.  You will want to find rings that complement each other rather than fight for the spotlight.

Match styles – Often your jeweler can help you match styles of rings, if they aren’t already matched up.  Occasionally, a mismatched set can look very nice, but more often than not it is better to choose a set with a consistent style.

Match metals – It is important to match the metals so that the rings look similar, but more importantly so one ring doesn’t damage the other.

Match shapes – Pay close attention to how the rings fit together and if the gemstone works with both rings.  Certain cuts of gemstone may not work well with a set as it could cause the stone to rub on the wedding band, scratching the band and possibly weakening the gemstone.

Choosing jewelry should be a fun experience that allows a bride and groom to complete his or her look with wedding sets. At Adam’s Jewelry we have a team of experienced jewelers to help you with that process. Who aren’t scared to answer any of the questions we know you’ll have, or be hesitant to throw out some ideas on how the overall look should be. At Adams we are here to help make your day amazing. The History of Bridal Headpieces

The use of bridal headpieces to enhance a bride’s attire on her wedding day has been taking place for a long time. Bridal headpieces come in many different styles like tiaras, headbands, veils, pins and combs, and flower crowns. Without a doubt the most widely used style of bridal headpiece is the tiara. Today, this gorgeous headpiece has been making brides feel more like a princess as she walks down the isle and stands at the altar. Adams Jewelers has a great selection of stunning headpieces that can cater to any bride’s taste that will add that little extra element of beauty.

Tiaras have a long history of doing this that even dates back to the time of the ancient Greek and Egyptian Empires. The tiara was born in Persia and worn by the King. The main reason it was made was so that it resembled a crown to show the world that whoever wore it was of great importance. Tiaras began incorporating precious metals and stones with the rise of Alexander the Great who loved to don his headpieces made of gold and embedded with diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires.

Jumping ahead in history, Napoleon actually played a big part in the spread of the headpieces popularity. He traveled everywhere with one upon his head, so the knowledge of its significance spread through society. Female Russian nobles began to wear extravagantly styled tiaras that included a center peak that was meant to brag about their wealth. In the 1800’s, tiaras had grown into a fashion statement and had worked their way into bridal attire.

At the turn of the 20th century, wedding tiaras became popular within the bridal fashion community. They became a must have item for socialites and were even being seen in motion pictures that only added to their popularity. Now brides are choosing to wear these headpieces over veils or other headpieces on their day of days. However, it is a common choice by brides to wear a tiara with a veil that can be removed after the ceremony. The bridal headpieces of today have become more extravagant than ever before, utilizing a multitude of designs, metals, and stones to create a unique piece of stunning attire. Knowing that the tiara has a rich history of being referred to as an accessory of the gods and reverence of kings and pharaohs, how can a bride not glow while this regal and exclusive bridal headpiece rests upon her head.

How To Choose The Perfect Bridal Jewelry

Jewelry can be a difficult choice for many brides. With so many options for jewelry and so many decisions to make on the big day, sticking to a few general rules really helps make the experience enjoyable. Bridal jewelry should not be overwhelming and should match the style of the bridal gown. If the gown is very elaborate, the jewelry should be simple. Exposed skin calls for more jewels, while a more concealed dress may only need earrings. It’s important to have a starting point, because every necklace does not go with every bridal dress. The bridal gown is going to be a distinct color, neckline, and style that determines the overall look, and helps the bride choose her jewelry accordingly

Different metals look better with different shades of white. Though this may seem subtle, matching the colors improves the bride’s look. If a bride is wearing a white gown, silver, platinum, and pearls are great go-tos. Diamond white is very versatile. Be sure to match the types of jewels and metals with the gown and jewelry. Nothing looks worse than a mismatch of jewel tones and metals. Mirroring the neckline of a gown is a great rule of thumb for choosing bridal jewelry. A sweetheart or a V-shaped neckline is accentuated by a pendent necklace. Conversely, if a bride chooses a higher neckline gown, a necklace is not often a great choice. A bride can choose to accessorize with a headpiece or chandelier earrings. However, it is essential not to overdo accessories, but to accentuate a dress with bridal jewelry.

Each gown has an overall style, a point in time, or a fashion by which it is inspired. Take note that the style of the gown should be in alignment with the characteristics of the jewelry. Having a sense of union between the jewelry and the dress improves the bride’s look. There should be coherence between the look of the bride and the theme of the wedding. Know your themes and do not hesitate to incorporate aspects of the bride’s style into other details of the wedding. The Sophisticated Charm of A Pocket Watch

A pocket watch is a watch that is made so it can be carried in the pocket of a vest, jacket, or pants, as opposed to being worn on the wrist. They have been around for centuries and were actually one of the first “wearable” pieces of tech. Though wristwatches have become widely common for everyday use, pocket watches still hold the high level of charm and sophistication that they had when they first made their appearance.  Adams Jewelers has a wide range of fine pocket watches that will fit any style and makes a perfect gift for any occasion.

Ever since it was developed in the 16th century to the time of the First World War, the pocket watch represented the most popular type of portable clock design and became an integral part of men’s fashion. The first ones to have sported these timepieces were thought to be businessmen of importance who needed to have a reliable sense of time to schedule out their days. This is why it became an item that is associated with the elite class for a long time. Then, they became widely popular with railroad workers because they helped prevent mishaps that are due to their lack of knowing the time. By this time, these portable watches became a staple in men’s fashion and were available in many different styles and price ranges.

Men from the working class to the elite sported the watch chained to their vest pocket because it served both function and style. The pocket watch can be made with common metals and basic faces that are priced to be sold in high quantities or they can be made from fine metals, like gold and silver, with highly detailed engravings, precious stones, and intricate faces that only a select number of people would be willing to splurge on. Whichever part of the price spectrum you decide to land on, these timepieces do not disappoint when it comes to charm, class, and timelessness. This is probably why many of these watches become heirloom pieces. Having the ability to be passed down from generation to generation without losing its soul allows the holder to be brought back to the time their grandfather, great-grandfather, or even great-great-grandfather once stood and reached into his vest pocket to check the time.

The pocket watch holds the unique ability to be dressed both up and down. It pairs greatly with a traditional three piece suit at formal events but can also seamlessly transition to go with a nice pair of trousers and button up as you take a stroll through town. Call or click today for more information on Adams Jewelers wide selection of these timeless timepieces.

Precious Stones: The Beauty of Gemstones

    The Value of Precious Stones

Precious stones have been utilized in some of the finest jewelry the world has seen. Adams jewelers offers a variety of stones that are cut, polished, and paired with fine metal such as white gold, yellow gold, and sterling silver to bring together a  beautiful collection of gemstone jewelry. Though many people know tend recognize the beauty of the gemstones, the way they are formed, valued, and crafted into the finished product you see people wearing is just as brilliant.

What are precious stones? They are defined as being visually appealing and valuable piece of naturally occurring mineral or rock. These minerals can be classified loosely as precious and semi-precious gemstones. They are categorized due to the minerals rarity and clarity which means the semi-precious minerals carry less commercial value than precious ones. The most common precious gemstones are diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald. These days a number of rare semi-precious gems can cost just as much as ruby or sapphire. This means that the line distinguishing the two categories is becoming more and more unclear as time goes on.

How are they formed? Many gemstones are formed under the surface of the earth over several million years. The interaction between different minerals and water in the earth’s crust or mantle is what creates different types of stones.  For example, when silica rich rocks such as sandstone mix with water, it will produce gemstones like amethysts and opals. Copper rich rocks give you copper bearing minerals like turquoise. Emeralds are formed when rain water mixes with minerals and then cools in open cracks or cavities. Topaz and ruby are created by the crystallizing of magma or gas bubbles that occur in volcanic rock. When a solution evaporates and cools, you have the mineral in its final natural form.

These stones can either be mined or naturally brought to the surface. After the raw minerals are collected they can be valued. Most value of these stones depends on the rarity of the mineral. The rarer the mineral the higher the price tag will be. However, color, cut, carat and clarity are also factors that are used to determine the value of gemstones with color and clarity holding the most weight. Usually, only extremely experienced professionals are the only ones who can put a value on most precious  gemstones.

Diamond Cuts: Bringing A Stone To Life

    The Three Different Diamond Cuts

Diamond cuts are what bring a stone to life, giving it that fiery sparkle that is beloved by many. The science behind the different cuts of diamonds is actually a little more complicated than you might think. The placement, depth, and shape of the cuts need to be exact so the diamond’s brilliance can be maximized making it the stones most important characteristic.

Diamond cuts are referred to not only as a diamond’s shape, but also how effectively the diamond returns light back to the viewer’s eye. A diamond that is very well cut will have that fiery brilliance, while a diamond that isn’t cut very well will be dull and lifeless regardless of the diamond’s clarity or color. Well cut diamonds not only offer up a more brilliant stone, but they also create the illusion that the diamond is actually larger that its carat weight suggests.

There are 3 different proportions of cuts that will eventually take part in determining the value of the stone. They are shallow cut, ideal cut, and deep cut. When a cut is too shallow it leaks light out through the bottom of the stone. If the cut is too deep then when light is taken in from the top of the stone it escapes out through the side. The ideal cut is the most sought after cut proportion, albeit the most expensive as well, because the cut allows light that is taken in from the top to be returned through the top of the diamond, maximizing its brilliance or “sparkle”. The illustration below demonstrates the interaction between light and the different proportioned cuts.

    Diamonds Adam's Image

When it comes to valuing cut diamonds, it is based on their rating. Common ratings are super ideal, ideal, very good, good, and fair. The higher the rating the more expensive the diamond will be. This is because diamonds with a higher rating of cut are often very hard to come by because their proportions, polish, and symmetry are near perfect for returning the maximum amount of light. As you move down the ratings, diamonds become less brilliant and less symmetrical. Many people purchase cuts that have ideal or very good ratings because the difference in brilliance isn’t obvious and they are much more affordable.

Give a Timeless Gift with Monthly Birthstones

Monthly birthstones are unique gemstones that accompany an individual birth month. Each birthstone has its own meaning and historical significance. Typically, each month is associated with a single gemstone, but you’ll notice that there a few months with multiple birthstones.

January: Garnet is mined in a rainbow of colors ranging from deep red Bohemian Garnet to vibrant greens of Russian Demantoid and African Tsavorite.

February: Amethyst is a variety of Quartz that holds a vibrant purple color that ranges from a blend of deep violet and red to a lighter lilac hue. It is believed by ancient Greeks and Romans that the Amethyst could ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus.

March: Aquamarine resembles a seawater color with its stunning pastel sky blue and color of the sea hues. This gemstone has been a classic symbol of youth, hope, health, and fidelity.

April: While diamonds are most commonly white, they also can be found in a variety of colors including yellow, blue, and pink.

May: Emeralds are among the rarest of gemstones and are often found with inclusions, or birthmarks. They exhibit an intense bluish hue in addition to their basic bold green color.

June: June birthdays claim two birthstones; Pearl and Alexandrite. Pearls are unique because they are the only gemstone that is produced from a living creature. Alexandrite gemstones are incredibly rare and change color depending on the lighting.

July: The Ruby represents love, passion, courage, and emotion. Rubies are famous for their gorgeous deep red colors.

August: Peridot is unique because it is one of the few gemstones that exists in primarily one color; a distinctive lime green. The Peridot gem is believed to instill power and influence.

September: The word “Sapphire” is Greek for blue. The Sapphire is the classic blue gemstone but also come in almost every color of the rainbow: pink, yellow, orange, peach, and violet colors.

October: October has two monthly birthstones; Tourmaline and Opal. Tourmaline means “mixed stone” and comes in a variety of colors including cranberry red, magenta, bright pink, peach, yellow, mint green, seawater blue, and violet. Opal is a very unique gem because each gemstone is garnished with a one-of-a-kind color combination.

November: November is also associated with two gemstones; Citrine and Topaz. Citrine is French for “lemon” which is very fitting since the color range of the Citrine gem is lemon yellow to a bright orangey brown. Topaz is often found in an amber gold, yellow, or a blushing pink.

Choosing the Best Watch Bands That Fit Your Lifestyle

Adams Jewelers has a great selection of watches that pair very well with all kinds of watch bands. Different bands have varying functions and styles, so choosing what kind of band you should go with really depends on your lifestyle. Having a good sense of what you will be doing and where you will be when wearing your watch should definitely weigh in when figuring out which type of band will be perfect for you.

There are a few different types of watch bands that are extremely popular today when pairing them with fine timepieces. These types include metal, leather, rubber, and NATO bands. Each one has their own unique benefits and style.

Leather straps are one of the most widely used and popular materials used for watch bands. They can be rustic, vintage, and professional in appearance which allows them to be worn when dressing casually or formally. You can find leather straps in a range of basic hides to exotics like snake, alligator, and lizard. Even imitation leather is made for those with more of a conservative budget. Leather straps offer comfort and a certain dimension of style that others do not.

Metal bands are the other most widely used and popular materials used to hold a timepiece to your wrist. Metal bands are extremely sturdy and can hold up to outdoor use more than any other type of band. Mostly made of stainless steel metal bands can be very affordable without losing much in terms of appearance and rigidity. However, if you are looking to splurge on a band, they are also made from many kinds of precious metal. Metal bands usually pair better with a casual, sporty style than with formal attire. Another material used for a sporty look that is able to take the wear and tear of the outdoors is rubber. This material is durable, lightweight and affordable. The polycarbonate blends used to make them keep them from getting dry and brittle and are usually infused with vanilla scents to keep them smelling nice after getting wet.

One of the hottest trends today is NATO bands. These bands are made up of fabric, usually nylon, which allows them to come in a huge variety of colors and patterns. These straps are affordable, extremely durable, and sophisticatedly sporty. These are very popular today because they dry quickly and don’t stick to the wrist after getting wet and are easily washable and can seamlessly be dressed up or down.

The wide selection of fine timepieces that Adams Jewelers offers can all pair beautifully with whatever type of watch bands fit your lifestyle best. So don’t hesitate to call, click, or visit Adams Jewelers today!
